Bartos, it's almost time, big guy. Our road trip through the highlights of the American Southwest.
As you can see, I've already poured my Jan Reizen sauce all over it and picked places to stay that I think are perfect for our trip. For most hotels I'm using the Bonvoy Friends & Family rate, which gets us some serious discounts. For the other hotels I used my trade rates.
I've assumed we're travelling in your car. Is that right? I've also planned everything up to and including 11 November, but of course I'm not sure you can make it until then. Curious to hear what you think. Enjoy the read and talk to you soon!

On Wednesday 4 November we ride into golden hour like real outlaws. A 1.5 hour Cowboy Ride through Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, right on our way from Phoenix to Sedona.

Every stop was chosen for its location, so we're in the best spot at sunrise and sunset. All rooms with two beds. For each stop you can see straight away what an upgrade would cost.
1 night, 4 November · Courtyard by Marriott Sedona
In Village of Oak Creek, right by Bell Rock, with trails from the door. With the Friends rate it's $202 a night instead of $670. Booked.
1 night, 5 November · Grand Canyon Hotel & Suites, Tusayan
All the lodges inside the park, El Tovar included, were fully booked. This is the best alternative, 10 minutes from the south entrance. Sunset and sunrise at the rim are still easy, and breakfast is included. Booked.
2 nights, 6 to 8 November · MGM Grand
The iconic hotel with the golden lion, with its own monorail stop to the rest of the Strip. Two nights, so a full Saturday in Vegas. Resort fee included, free cancellation until 2 November. Booked.
1 night, 8 November · Stovepipe Wells Village Hotel, Deluxe Room
A wow location. Old West style with a saloon, a few minutes' walk from the sand dunes and on the west side of the park, which saves us an hour to Lone Pine. The standard rooms felt a bit dated, so I went for the Deluxe Room with two queen beds. Worth the extra 25 euros each. Booked.
1 night, 9 November · Sheraton Universal
On the hill above Universal Studios, with views over the Hollywood Hills. Room with two double beds. Eight minutes' walk to the metro and a few stops to the Walk of Fame. Parking here is around $50. Booked, free cancellation until 6 November.
1 night, 10 November · Courtyard by Marriott Santa Monica
A few blocks from the beach, the Third Street Promenade and the pier, the official end of Route 66. 25 minutes from LAX. Free cancellation until the day of arrival. Booked.

Straight from the marathon in New York to Phoenix. Landing at 00:12, Bart picks me up and we head to a bar for a quick one.
Easy first day. Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's desert home, and then shooting at an outdoor range in the desert. Evening in Old Town Scottsdale.
We shoot today, rested and sober. Bart, you know the ranges here. Which one do you recommend?
Leave Phoenix around 12:00. On the way, Montezuma Castle, a cliff dwelling over 800 years old. At 15:30 the Cowboy Ride through the river in Cottonwood, into golden hour. Then the last half hour to Sedona.
Watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in the room tonight. Then we drive on the next day with that music in our heads.
Early hike to Cathedral Rock or Bell Rock right by the hotel. Then via Flagstaff and Cameron, the old Navajo trading post, into the east side of the park along Desert View Drive. Sunset at Mather Point or Yavapai Point.
Feel like a detour? Jerome, the old copper town on the side of the mountain, is 45 minutes from Sedona. The perfect place to buy a cowboy hat.
Sunrise at the rim and breakfast at the hotel. Then the real Route 66: Williams, Seligman and the Hackberry General Store. Across the Hoover Dam into Nevada, where we gain an hour. Evening on the Strip with the Bellagio fountains.
Going for a flight over the canyon? Then we take the first one of the morning from Tusayan, five minutes from the hotel. Soft light, little wind, and we're still in Vegas in time for dinner.
A full day in Vegas. Sleep in, pool at the MGM, or a morning drive through Red Rock Canyon, 30 minutes from the Strip. In the evening Fremont Street in old Vegas, where it all started.
Stop at the Amargosa Opera House, the life's work of dancer Marta Becket. Then Badwater, 86 metres below sea level, and sunset at Zabriskie Point. At night, stars over the dunes.
The restaurants at Stovepipe Wells close around 20:00. So don't hang around too long at Zabriskie.
Sunrise on the sand dunes, then Movie Road in the Alabama Hills, where hundreds of westerns were filmed, and the Museum of Western Film History in Lone Pine. On to LA, car at the hotel and the metro to the Walk of Fame. In the evening, Griffith Observatory with the city lights.
The Alabama Hills are the best drone spot of the trip. A permit is required, I'll apply for it in advance.
In the morning the Hollywood sign, then along Sunset Boulevard and the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu. Sunset on the Santa Monica pier, the end of Route 66.
Late checkout or bags at reception, and one more day of beach and Venice Beach. At LAX around 17:30 for the 20:40 flight, Bart drives back to Phoenix.
